Sir Michael was Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills from January 2012 until December 2016.
Prior to his position at Ofsted, Sir Michael had a distinguished career as a teacher for 43 years – 26 of these as a head teacher in London secondary schools. Most recently he held the role of Executive Principal at Mossbourne Community Academy in Hackney, where he was credited with turning a school situated in a deprived part of east London into one of the best performing in England.
In 2000, whilst head teacher for St Bonaventure’s Catholic School, he was knighted for services to education.
Sir Michael joined the Education Policy Institute as a Trustee on the 1st January 2017.
