At this year’s Liberal Democrat Party Conference, the Education Policy Institute has partnered with AQA to hold a public panel on: ‘What would a Curriculum and Assessment system that delivers for everyone actually look like?’
Every child should be able to develop the foundational knowledge and skills they need to succeed. However, at key stage 2, nearly four in ten pupils in 2024 did not meet the expected standards in reading, writing and maths. These early gaps have significant consequences. The Curriculum and Assessment Review is an important opportunity to reflect on the current system; the anticipated recommendations will be a key moment to shape future policies that consider the needs of all children.
The current system has improved attainment for some children. However, the Review’s interim findings highlighted that stubborn inequalities have persisted, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds and for young people with special education needs and disabilities (SEND). A key concern for the Review is how curriculum and assessment should evolve to ensure high standards for these pupils and a high-quality post-16 qualification landscape that supports all learners’ needs and career goals.
Come along to this panel to hear from policymakers, education leaders and sector experts who will consider how the system should be designed to recognise and validate the strength of all learners. The panellists will consider how inclusive reform could help to address other complex challenges, including pupil absence and wellbeing. The panellists will also consider the potential for different types of qualifications to supplement exams.
Speakers will be announced in due course.
