In July 2023, the Education Policy Institute held an event to launch our first ‘education priorities in the next general election’ report, which covers priorities in the early years, school workforce, school system and funding, and post-16 and higher education.
A general election is expected to take place sometime in mid or late 2024. Due to wider economic challenges, including increasing energy prices and rising cost of living, there continues to be a risk that education will not be a key priority in party manifestos and in the public discourse leading up to the election.
Kindly supported by the Nuffield Foundation, our two-stage research project firstly collates evidence on the education priorities for the incoming government and secondly, once the manifestos are published, will assess the education-related pledges to review how well they are aligned with the evidence and whether they are likely to tackle key challenges.
In July 2023, we held an event to launch the first report, which covers priorities in the early years, school workforce, school system and funding, and post-16 and higher education.
Following opening remarks from Josh Hillman, Nuffield Foundation and Natalie Perera, EPI, there was an overview of the key findings from Jon Andrews, Head of Analysis at EPI. We then welcomed an expert panel to share their thoughts including Yiannis Koursis OBE, Barnsley College; Julie McCulloch, ASCL; Purnima Tanuku OBE, National Day Nurseries Association; Paul West, Spencer Academies Trust and Carole Willis, National Foundation for Educational Research.
