At this year’s Conservative Party Conference, the Education Policy Institute (EPI) has partnered with the Ambition Institute to hold a public panel event on ‘Teacher professional development reforms: the most impactful education accomplishment of the Conservative government?’
Research shows that effective high-quality continuing professional development (CPD) is proven to support teacher retention, particularly for early career teachers, and has a significant effect on pupils’ learning outcomes.
In 2021, the Conservative government overhauled the CPD system, introducing an entitlement to two years of support for new teachers and a suite of leadership development courses rooted in the latest evidence around teaching and learning. Known as the golden thread, these reforms represent a continuing line of evidence-informed CPD for teachers and leaders throughout their career.
Given the significant positive impact of high-quality CPD, it is important to consider how to safeguard the golden thread reforms. This panel will bring together policy makers, school leaders and other education stakeholders to explore the role of CPD in combatting some of the largest challenges facing the school sector today, including the recruitment and retention crisis and the continuing gaps in outcomes. Ultimately, speakers will ask what the impact could be of ensuring the reforms become a lasting legacy.
We are delighted to welcome Marie Hamer, Ambition Institute; Daniel Kebede, NEU and Liz Robinson, Big Education. Jon Andrews, EPI’s Head of Analysis will chair the session.
** Note: This event will take place in the conference secure zone. To access the secure zone you will need to obtain a pass directly from the Conservative Party.**
