Conservative Party Conference: Education for the future – preparing young people for net zero

2nd October 2023 02/10/2023 14:00-15:15

At this year’s Conservative Party Conference, the Education Policy Institute (EPI) has partnered with STEM Learning UK to hold a public panel event on ‘Education for the future: preparing young people for Net Zero?’

The Net Zero Review highlights “the economic opportunity of the 21st century” , a global market for goods and services that could be worth over £1 trillion to UK businesses by 2030 . There are already 430,000 jobs in low carbon businesses and their supply chains and this number is expected to grow rapidly. Net Zero supports levelling up, creating opportunities for growth across the UK e.g. in offshore renewables, electric vehicles and retrofitting homes.

Education has a critical role to play in preparing young people for the opportunities created by Net Zero. The Green Jobs Taskforce highlights the role of schools in providing the knowledge and skills required for the jobs of the future, emphasising the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as well as data and digital skills.

Young people will also shape our Net Zero future through the choices they make as citizens and consumers. How can education prepare them to make informed choices for themselves, their families and their country?

This panel brings together policy makers, business and school leaders and other education stakeholders, to consider how we can best prepare our children and young people for the opportunities and challenges created by Net Zero – and the support needed from employers, education providers and government.

We are delighted to welcome Chris Skidmore MP; Esther Bird, Youth Activist; Jonathan Johnson, Changing Lives Learning Trust; Richard Crossick, Ørsted and Séverine Trouillet, STEM Learning. Jon Andrews, EPI’s Head of Analysis will chair the session.

** Note: This event will take place in the conference secure zone. To access the secure zone you will need to obtain a pass directly from the Conservative Party.**
