At this year’s Labour Party Conference, the Education Policy Institute has partnered with AQA to hold a public panel on: ‘Preparing young people for a digital world: what the evidence tells us’
Digital technology shapes how we learn, communicate and work, yet the education system has not kept pace with the skills and confidence young people need to navigate this landscape safely and effectively. As policymakers consider the future of curriculum and assessment, this panel will explore what a coherent, system‑wide approach to digital literacy should look like and what needs to change to prepare young people for a digital world.
AQA’s recent research highlights that young people’s heavy use of technology does not necessarily translate into digital competence, and that teachers often feel underprepared to teach these skills within the curriculum – with EPI research highlighting that the growing demand for digital skills in the job market is not being met. At the same time, debates continue about the role of digital transformation in assessment and the opportunities to embed digital literacy across subjects rather than confining it to Computing.
This timely panel brings together policymakers, school and college leaders, and sector experts to examine the evidence, debate the trade‑offs, and consider how the education system can ensure every young person develops the digital knowledge, skills and confidence they need to succeed.
