Senior Researcher, School Workforce


Who are EPI?

 

The Education Policy Institute is an independent, impartial and evidence-based research institute that aims to promote high quality educational outcomes, regardless of social background. Through our research we provide insight, commentary and critiques about education policy in England, shedding light on what is working and where further progress is required.

We are a small and dedicated team of 15-20 people, working in a mission-led organisation to produce original, quantitative research that has an impact on government policy.

Our talented research team includes experienced statisticians, economists and policy experts who are dedicated to uncovering the best available evidence that leads policy development in English education. We also have a committed communications team who work to ensure that our research is relied upon in Parliament, the media and government policy.

 

What does the school workforce team do?

 

Teachers are at the heart of school performance and outcomes. Ensuring that the education system has high quality, motivated and effective teachers, supported by strong leadership, is vital to achieving world-class educational standards.

Our aim is to provide an evidence base on issues such as teacher recruitment and retention, workload, pay, and professional development – assessing the extent to which current policies foster an environment in which the teaching profession is able to thrive.

We answer questions like:

  • Why are so many young teachers quitting the profession and what should the government do about it?
  • Is great leadership really what makes a great school and, if so, where do the best leaders come from?
  • How much should we spend on better continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers?


Who are we looking for?

 

  • A quantitative analyst, economist or statistician who is ready to begin leading research projects that result in policy recommendations
  • An enthusiastic team member who is keen to help build a small but growing research institute by contributing across the organisation.
  • Someone who wants to use their statistical and coding skills to build multi-level models, implement regression discontinuity designs and construct analysis pipelines for large administrative datasets, rather than using their statistical and coding skills to simply count people in Excel. We primarily use R but there’s also a bit of Stata and SPSS across the research team.
  • A confident communicator who wants to get out and explain the research to educators, policy-makers, and journalists.


Working arrangements

 

While this post is being offered on a full-time and permanent basis, the Education Policy Institute is committed to supporting a range of working arrangements. For example, we welcome applications from those wishing to:

  •       work on a part-time basis;
  •       split their time between the Education Policy Institute and an academic setting; or
  •       join on secondment for a fixed period from their current employer.
