In February 2021 we partnered with Local Trust as part of their ‘Towards Resilience’ programme – a series of discussions looking at why the pandemic has overwhelmed our society and how community can play a part in building a more resilient future.
Our session, ‘Towards resilience: addressing inequalities in education’ looked at how the pandemic is exposing existing inequalities in our education system and how we can learn from this to make a fairer and more resilient school system.
You can find a recording of the session, along with a paper summarising the discussion on Local Trust’s website.
The original event description can be found below.
On 2nd February we will be welcoming leaders from across the education sector to present their insights on how the sector has responded to the pandemic and how communities can help build a stronger education system which better serves disadvantaged pupils. Ahead of discussion, EPI’s Chief Executive, Natalie Perera, explores how the school system and the communities they serve have been grappling with these issues during the pandemic in a blog which you can find on Local Trust’s website.
Our panel includes:
- Natalie Perera, Chief Executive Officer, Education Policy Institute (chair)
- Javed Khan, Chief Executive Officer, Barnardo’s
- Martyn Oliver, Chief Executive Officer, Outwood Grange Academies Trust
- Gina Cicerone, Co-Chief Executive Officer, Fair Education Alliance
- Alan Fraser, Chair, Heston West Big Local and Director of Community Partnerships and Business Generation, Cranford Community College
About Local Trust
Local Trust was founded in 2012 to deliver Big Local, a National Lottery Community Fund-funded programme which committed £1m each to 150 neighbourhoods across England. They aim to put more power, resources and decision-making into the hands of local communities, to enable them to transform and improve their lives and the places in which they live. This event is part of a larger ‘Towards Resilience’ programme from Local Trust, with other events covering green space, social care and energy.
