At this year’s Liberal Democrat Party Conference, the Education Policy Institute (EPI) is hosting an open fringe panel discussion: ‘Reducing stressors and adverse experiences for vulnerable young people’.
Research shows that young people in severe adversity or disadvantage in the state secondary school system are disproportionately at risk of being excluded or entering alternative provision. Furthermore, those young people are likely to have an increased risk of trauma and adverse experiences post-pandemic. In advance of the Government ‘Behaviour management strategies, in-school units and managed moves’ consultation results later this year, and against a backdrop of continued turbulence in education settings, it is important to ensure discussions around ‘Behaviour’ do not put undue responsibility on the young person and instead shift the lens to finding solutions to better support them.
